Ordering the 8-Yard Kilt
On this page, the 8-yard kilt is selected in the Add On menu and adds $20 to the price. Please make sure it is ticked when you order. If it is not selected, the kilt is made to our standard specification.
Why Eight Yards?
More cloth means more pleats and deeper ones. An 8-yard kilt hangs with more weight, moves more when you walk and keeps its shape well. It is the style many pipers, dancers and traditionalists prefer, and the difference is easy to see from behind. The gallery for this outfit shows several tartans in the 8-yard style, so you can see how different setts look when fully pleated.
The Rest of the Outfit
The black Prince Charlie jacket is tailored in 100% pure wool from your neck, shoulder width, chest, sleeve and back length, and is shown with a waistcoat. The kilt is made in acrylic wool from your waist and kilt length (with optional hip/seat and fell) and includes:
- A triple-fringed apron, with a simple or hand-twisted (+$50) fringe
- Pleats to the sett, or to the stripe (+$20)
- 100% leather straps with rust-free buckles in Silver, Antique, Black or Gold
- Cotton lining and belt loops
- About two inches of waist adjustment either way
Accessories You Choose, at No Extra Charge
Select a Scottish or Ghillie shirt, a leather or dress sporran, a kilt pin, a fly plaid brooch, kilt flashes, a leather belt and buckle, kilt hose and ghillie brogues from the menus. They are included in the price. Matching tartan neckwear, fly plaids and hats are $20 to $40 each.
Tartan Choice
Choose “Same as Picture” or any of more than 1,600 tartans. Some tartans carry a surcharge, shown in the menu, and you can name an unlisted tartan in the Additional Information box.
Getting the Measurements Right
A fuller kilt deserves an accurate fit. Measure your waist where the kilt will sit, usually at or just above the navel. If you can, add your hip/seat measurement at the widest part of your hips, and your fell measurement from waist to seat. These optional fields help our tailors shape the pleats so the 8-yard kilt hangs evenly. For kilt length, measure from the waist point to the middle of the kneecap. Where to Wear It
Weddings, formal dinners, pipe band events, Highland games and Burns Night. The fuller kilt adds presence to formal occasions and looks especially good outdoors.
Care
Dry clean the jacket and waistcoat. Hand wash the kilt in cold water, avoid harsh chemicals and hang it by the waistband so the deep pleats stay sharp.
